#BoostMyBio: Pitch Wars Blog Hop

Okay, I am a few days late with this. Work started back on the 30th and family emergencies have come up, so . did not get to write and post my #BoostMyBio. HOWEVER, I refuse to not complete the #PWPoePrompts lol. So here it is:

About the Author:

Hi, I’m Traci-Anne Canada. I am a high school literature teacher. I currently teach tenth-grade world literature. I am only going into my second year teaching, but I really love it. Speaking of things I love, I also love video games, reading, and knitting. I run a YouTube channel about writing and the writing industry and it combines my enjoyment of YouTube with my love of video editing.

I am also one of those cliche millennials that are way too addicted to social media, so you can find me on Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, and Tumblr, though some I use more than others (*glares at Twitter).

[caption id="attachment_1355" align="alignleft" width="152"] Romance AND fantasy! GIMMIE[/caption]

I tend to lean towards reading fantasy and romance, especially YA fantasy and romances with black heroines. As such, I also write the same. My books follow the theme of angry black queer girls getting shit done and the boys and girls that love them. I try to write diversely, meaning, people all along the queer spectrum, beyond the gender binary, neurodiverse characters, and people of different races and creeds. It is less that I want to make sure everyone is represented and more that I want to show the world as it is where we are all represented. Media tends to do a terrible job at this, but that is a rant for a different blog post.

About the Manuscript:

Now, bet you wanna hear about my manuscript, huh? Well first, let me drop some aesthetics on ya!

I made the above for my computer background. It was great inspiration as I drafted and revised. As you may have guessed from the pictures chosen, my novel, Star of Xianu, features a badass female thief, a heist, a search for a jewel, a fantasy world, and romance. Some things you may not get from the aesthetics, but Star of Xianu contains are an entirely POC cast, female friendships, women that want and will fight for power, a matriarchal society, teasing brother-sister relationship, twists and turns

The quick and dirty pitch is “The Princess of Thieves, Robyn Hood is blackmailed by a real prince to help him steal a priceless jewel or risk having her identity revealed…and the end of the world.”

Think of it as an OCEANS 11 meets AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER.

The less quick and dirty pitch, is as follows:

Living on the streets for years after running away from a foster home, eighteen-year-old Robyn is used to being on her own. She does whatever it takes to survive, which means a life of crime. She becomes so good at it, that she makes it her life’s mission to help others by stealing from rich corporations and giving the money to the poor. She quickly becomes one of the most notorious thieves in her realm.

When Robyn takes on a partner for a hack job that’s too complicated even for her, he sells her out to the police. But her treacherous partner isn’t who he claims to be. Chen Lui is the prince of the elfish realm, Xianu. In exchange for her freedom, Chen blackmails Robyn into helping him to recover the Star of Xianu, a jewel that is the source of the Xian people’s magic and the key to their very existence. If it’s destroyed, the entire race will die. He also reveals that she is part Xian. For a girl who never knew her place in the world, the opportunity to learn her past is worth its weight in gold. But in order to do that, she must save them first.

Robyn and Chen must find the jewel before his people learn that it’s missing and chaos descends on Xianu. With suspects around every corner, Chen and Robyn must race against time to solve the mystery of who stole the jewel. To get it back they will have to pull off the biggest con of their lives—all while not being too distracted by their growing feelings for each other.

Not to toot my own horn but

Guess you’re gonna want to know the brass tacks too, huh? (Am I even using “brass tacks” correctly? Oh well.)

STAR OF XIANU is an 81k YA contemporary fantasy with series potential that would appeal to the fans of Ally Carter and Daniel José Older. Like me, my main character, Robyn, is a black bisexual woman looking for the world’s next adventure. It is a standalone novel with series potential.

In an attempt at full clarity, I tried for Pitch Wars with this manuscript last year, but did not get in. Since then it has gone through a major revision.
